     ในเบื้องต้นสกุล Khaosokia ยังไม่ถูกจัดให้อยู่ในเผ่า (tribe) ใด ในวงศ์กก ระหว่าง Cariceae, Dulichieae หรือ Scirpeae สกุลกกเขาสกเป็นพืชล้มลุก เป็นกอหนาแน่น อายุหลายปี มีเหง้า กลีบประดับยาวคล้ายใบ ออกตามข้อของช่อดอกช่อดอกแบบช่อแยกแขนงแคบๆ แยกเพศต่างต้น ช่อดอกย่อย (spikelet) รูปแถบทรงกระบอก ช่อดอกเพศผู้และช่อดอกเพศเมียคล้ายกัน ดอกย่อยมีกลีบรวมคล้ายขนแข็ง 7 กลีบ เกสรเพศผู้ 3 อัน เกสรเพศเมีย 3 อัน ผลย่อยแบบเปลือกแข็งเมล็ดล่อน (nutlet)
     สกุลกกเขาสกเป็นสกุลที่มีเพียงสมาชิกเพียงชนิดเดียว (monotypic) คือ กกเขาสก Khoasokia caricoides D. A. Sympson, Chayam. & J. Parn พบเฉพาะทางภาคใต้ของไทย ชื่อพ้อง  สกุล Khaosokia ตั้งขึ้นตามชื่อของอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสก สถานที่พบ เป็นสกุลใหม่ของโลก
     กกลำต้นอ้วนสั้น มีเหง้า มีรากแขนงมากมายบริเวณกาบใบที่โคนต้น ลำต้นตั้งตรงหรือห้อยลง ยาวได้ประมาณ 60 ซม. ใบจำนวนมากออกที่โคน รูปแถบ ยาวได้ประมาณ 50 ซม. กาบใบยาว 8-9 ซม. ลิ้นใบบาง ช่อดอกแบบแยกแขนงแคบๆ ยาว 3.5-7 ซม. มี 2-4 ข้อ แต่ละข้อมีกาบประดับยาวถึงได้ถึง 37 ซม. ช่อดอกย่อยมี 3-11 ช่อ แกนช่อยาว 2-7 ซม. ช่อดอกย่อยรูปทรงกระบอกแคบๆ ยาว 2-2.7 ซม. กาบช่อย่อย (glume) ด้านล่างเป็นหมันมี 7-9 กาบ นอกนั้นสืบพันธุ์ได้ กาบช่อย่อยรูปไข่ ยาว 3.5-4 มม. มีขอบบางๆ วงกลีบรวมเป็นขนแข็งมี 7 อัน ขนาดไม่เท่ากัน ในดอกเพศเมียสั้นกว่า เกสรเพศผู้ 3 อัน อับเรณูยาวประมาณ 1 มม. สีขาวอมเหลือง เกสรเพศเมียปลายแยกเป็น 3 เส้น ผลย่อยผิวเรียบ
     กกเขาสกเป็นพืชถิ่นเดียวของไทย พบเฉพาะทางภาคใต้ตอนบนบริเวณเขื่อนรัชประภา อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสก จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี ขึ้นตามหน้าผาและรอยแยกหินปูนที่แสงแดดส่องถึง ระดับความสูงประมาณ 100 เมตร
